The Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Kolymvari, which has enjoyed almost 70 years of creative initiative in the production, packaging and marketing olive of oil, is one of the largest organisations for the collection and processing of Cretan olive oil; it carries on vigorous export activity to many countries in Europe, the United tates, Canada and Australia. It has at its disposal the most modern storage and packaging facilities, with a total storage capacity of  7,100 tonnes of olive oil, completely constructed from stainless steel; the packaging facility is built to high specifications and can handle  30 tonnes daily. The quality control of the products is carried out at one of the most respected chemical laboratories in Europe, recognised by the International Council for Olive Oil. Recently the olive oil produced in the region of Kolymvari and packaged at the union of agricultural Cooperatives there, was assigned the designation of origin "Kolymvari, Chania, Crete", as a product of particular quality and chemical and organoleptic characteristics which owe themselves to the variety, the microclimate of the region, the soil and the method of cultivation. This product is certified by the relevant authorities where both its chemical and it's organoleptic content are concerned.

The auhtenticity of the extra virgin olive oil form the Union of Kolymvari, has resulted in the award of International prizes for quality such as "The American Tasting Award" 1995- National Board of the American Tasting Institute, " The American Taste Award Food Service Division" 1996 - National Board of the American Tasting Institute, "The International Gold Star of Quality", Spain 1997. The vigorous export activities of he Union, combined with the high quality of their products, has led to its selection as one of the 44 best European enterprises which will participate in the "EU Gateways to Japan II Food & Drink Trade Mission" in June 1998; held in Tokyo.
